The Riverfront Community Center, 123 South Esplanade Street, Leavenworth, Kansas, is listed as a cooling center. This is only during times of an extreme heat warning which is starting today June 29, 2026. The official site the City uses for this designation is www.weather.gov/eax. Citizens may use the facility for this purpose free of charge during these extreme heat warnings.
Here are the parameters for the community center as a cooling center:
Beginning Monday June 29, the City of Leavenworth will close the intersection of 20th Street Trafficway and Dakota Street for approximately 30 days. This is being done as part of the 2026 Pavement Management Program to invest roughly $2.2 million in major streets repairs throughout the City. Concrete pavement in the streets is being demolished and replaced. Inclement weather can affect the length of construction projects.
The City of Leavenworth and the Leavenworth Fire Department will host an Open House 10:30 a.m. July 20 to mark the opening of the new Fire Station No. 3 at 2805 2nd Avenue. The public is invited to join elected officials, city staff and the Leavenworth Fire Department to celebrate with a fire hose uncoupling ceremony and tours of the new station.
The original Station No. 3 at this location was constructed in 1965. It served the Leavenworth community for 60 years.
The City of Leavenworth offices close Friday July 3 for the Independence Day holiday. The Riverfront Community Center will be open Friday, July 3 and closed Saturday, July 4. Parks and Recreation administration offices will be closed July 3.
Trash will remain on regular schedule the weeks of June 29-July 3. The Recycling Center and Brush Site are open Friday, July 3 and closed Saturday, July 4. There will be no large item pickup the week of June 29-July 3. "Free First Saturday" at the Brush Site and Municipal Service Center will be Saturday, July 11.
