In 2022, the City of Leavenworth received a Transportation Alternatives Grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation for $1.27 million. The grant will pay for a portion of construction work needed on Vilas Street from 10th to 22nd Street with City matching funds. The intention of the project is to provide safety features for pedestrians and bicyclists. Features of the project include:

  • New sidewalks on the south side of Vilas Street from 10th to 15th
  • New sidewalks on the north side of Vilas Street from 20th to 22nd leading to Henry Leavenworth Elementary School
  • Repair of existing sidewalks and streets
  • New curbs, gutters and stormwater features
  • All new ADA ramps at each intersection
  • Contractor: Linaweaver Construction
  • March 2026 Preconstruction Meeting
  • March or April 2026 Construction start pending weather

Currently construction is scheduled for 2026.
