Vilas Street from 10th to 22nd

In 2022, the City of Leavenworth received a Transportation Alternatives Grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation for $1.27 million. The grant will pay for a portion of construction work needed on Vilas Street from 10th to 22nd Street with City matching funds. The intention of the project is to provide safety features for pedestrians and bicyclists. Features of the project include:
- New sidewalks on the south side of Vilas Street from 10th to 15th
- New sidewalks on the north side of Vilas Street from 20th to 22nd leading to Henry Leavenworth Elementary School
- Repair of existing sidewalks and streets
- New curbs, gutters and stormwater features
- All new ADA ramps at each intersection

Project Schedule
- Construction began in April 2026
- Construction is in three phases based on location:
- Phase 3 is scheduled to begin first and is from 10th Avenue to 15th Street
- Phase 2 is from 15th Street to 20th Street Trafficway
- Phase 1 is from 20th Street Trafficway to 22nd Street
- The week of May 4, contractors will be doing backfill of previous projects. They will be putting in temporary seeding in May that will be replaced by sod in the fall.
- Project schedules are subject to change because of changing weather, but roughly the contractors plan to begin Phase 2 after Memorial Day and Phase 3 in July.
- Mill and Overlay is scheduled for October and will last roughly 5 construction days
The project is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2026.
