City Awarded More Than $1 Million for Transportation Improvements
The City of Leavenworth has been awarded a combined $1,018,000 through two Kansas Department of Transportation programs for upcoming transportation improvements in the community.
The awards include $618,000 through the Transportation Alternatives (TA) Program for the City's Centennial Overlook to Downtown Improvements project and $400,000 through the City Connecting Link Improvement Program (CCLIP) for surface preservation work on K-7.
Programs like TA and CCLIP allow the City to use state and federal funding to cover a significant portion of major transportation projects instead of relying entirely on local tax dollars. The City will continue working with KDOT as both projects move through planning and design. More information about the scope, schedule, and construction impacts of each project will be shared as details are finalized.
Centennial Overlook to Downtown Improvements
The $618,000 TA award comes at an exciting time for Leavenworth as KDOT moves forward with the replacement of the Centennial Bridge over the Missouri River.
The City's Centennial Overlook to Downtown Improvements project will build on that larger investment by helping improve the connection between the bridge, Leavenworth's riverfront, and downtown.
The Transportation Alternatives Program supports projects that make it safer and easier for people to walk, bike, and travel through their communities. With the Centennial Bridge replacement planned, the City has an opportunity to look beyond the bridge itself and improve how people arriving in Leavenworth connect with the rest of the community.
Better connections between the bridge, riverfront, and downtown will make the area easier to navigate for residents and visitors while also bringing more activity into downtown and supporting local businesses and destinations.
The estimated project cost is approximately $771,398, with KDOT funding 80% and the City contributing the remaining $154,280.
K-7 Surface Preservation
The City also received $400,000 through KDOT's City Connecting Link Improvement Program (CCLIP) for surface preservation work on K-7/4th Street, from Marion Street to Rees Street and from Poplar Street to Spruce Street.
CCLIP assists Kansas communities with improvements to state highways that also serve as city streets. KDOT estimates the total cost of Leavenworth's project at $823,800, with the CCLIP award covering roughly 48.6% of the project and the City contributing the remaining $423,800.
The work will help extend the life of the roadway and address needed pavement improvements along one of the City's major transportation routes.
