Thanks to a federal grant program received by the City of Leavenworth, $483,319 is being invested into downtown infrastructure in the summer and fall of 2026. There are 89 sidewalk accessibility ramps and entryways being constructed at 18 sites throughout downtown between Choctaw and Seneca streets and Esplanade and Broadway streets.

Work is done through grant funded through the Kansas Department of Transportation called "Transportation Alternatives." Local contractor Julius Kaaz Construction was awarded a bid for $420,420 through a competitive bid process with the Kansas Department of Transportation.

The additional $62,899 helps fund engineering and design. The grant pays for the project, with no local tax dollars used from the City's budget for construction.

The projects involve tearing out old sidewalk corners and approaches, pouring new concrete and adding accessibility compliant ramps. The goal is to improve walkability for pedestrians in the downtown area.

The project began in May and is scheduled to last until fall. Please look out for signs redirecting pedestrian traffic around closed sidewalks.
