The National Weather Service is predicting extreme cold weather temperatures Friday Jan. 23 and Saturday, Jan. 24, along with a chance for snow. With windchill, weather temperatures on Friday and Saturday will be between -10 and -25 Fahrenheit.
Because of unsafe working conditions, the City of Leavenworth will cancel curbside trash pickup on those days.
This means that trash normally collected on Thursday and Friday will not be picked up. A holiday earlier in the week led to an additional delay.
City of Leavenworth trash crews work on the backs of trash trucks, riding on the outside of vehicles and already work in extreme weather conditions. After consultation with Leavenworth County Emergency Management, we determined conditions are not safe for our staff.
City staff apologizes for the lack of trash pickup service. We understand the inconvenience this causes for residents. Trash pickup service is extremely important to us in keeping our community clean. Residents are reminded that there is no limit to the number of filled trash bags our crews can pick up. Current plans are for trash operations to continue normally during the week of Jan. 26 – 30.
Our street crew staff have been adding brine to streets in preparation for the upcoming storm. As of Jan. 21, Emergency Snow Routes have had brine added and crews are working on hot spots. This is a new technique in recent years that staff have added to the road prior to a storm to help prevent slick ice from making road travel dangerous. Adding brine to roads also prevents need for less salt on our streets. Brining operations will continue until Friday.
The Brush Site and Recycling Center will be closed on Saturday. The Recycling Center will be open on Friday.
