Riverfront Community Center opens as a cooling center June 29

The Riverfront Community Center, 123 South Esplanade Street, Leavenworth, Kansas, is listed as a cooling center. This is only during times of an extreme heat warning which is starting today June 29, 2026. The official site the City uses for this designation is www.weather.gov/eax. Citizens may use the facility for this purpose free of charge during these extreme heat warnings.

Here are the parameters for the community center as a cooling center:

  1. Only during an “Extreme Heat Warning”
  2. Only during open business hours. The facility will close July 4 for the holiday.
  3. Specific hours for cooling center are as follows: 
    • Monday through Friday, noon – 7 p.m. 
    • Saturday noon – 4 p.m. 
    • Sunday 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

4. Individuals wishing to use the facility to cool off during these hours should be directed to the gymnasium where they must sit on the bleachers. They must stay in the gym and stay sitting on the bleachers except to use the restroom. Individuals failing to follow these guidelines will be asked to leave and will forfeit their privilege to use the community center for this purpose.
