Commission to study 2026 budget

City staff have presented a proposal for the 2026 Operating Budget to the Leavenworth City Commission. On July 14, staff will present the operating budget to the Commission in detail at an all-day work session. The proposed budget prepares for lower local sales tax collections, a reduction in workforce through attrition, a 10% reduction of overtime in all departments except public safety, and no increases in wages or salaries to City personnel. The proposed budget would increase the City’s portion of the mill levy by 2.376 mills. The Leavenworth Public Library’s proposed budget would increase their portion of the mill by .507 mills for a total mill increase of 2.883 mills. Public feedback may be submitted directly to the City Commission. Members of the public are invited to attend the public hearings on August 26. The scheduled budget meetings and hearings are as follows:
- 8:30 a.m. July 14 – City Commission Study Session in the City Commission room, 100 N. Fifth Street. Staff will present the proposed budget to the City Commission. The City Commission may ask for changes to be made to the proposed budget during or after this discussion. Requested changes will be incorporated into the budget for presentation at the budget hearing on August 26. No public comment is scheduled.
- 6:00 p.m. August 26 – A public hearing to exceed the revenue neutral rate will be held. Public is invited to comment during the public hearing. A roll-call vote will be held to exceed the revenue neutral rate after the public hearing. After that vote, there will be a public hearing for the proposed budget. Public is invited to comment during the public hearing. After the public hearing, the City Commission will vote on the budget.
