Earlier this year, the City of Leavenworth was awarded a Planning and Programming grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School Program. Safe Routes to School is a multi-faceted approach that promotes walking, biking, and rolling to school using policies, programs, and projects. The goal is to get more kids walking, biking, and rolling to school, improve safety and increase health and physical activity. Over the next few months, the City will be working with KDOT to create our first Safe Routes to Schools plan. The plan will include policy, program, and project recommendations to make walking, biking and rolling to school safer and more enjoyable.

As City and state transportation officials work to the develop the plan, here are a few ways you can participate to help make it the best it can be:

  • Complete the caregiver survey to let us know how your family currently travels to school, why you travel to school the way you do, and what would encourage you to walk or bike to school more. Please complete the survey by October 3.

  • Head to our interactive webmap to let us know where in town you think there are issues; and what you would need to walk or bike to school more. Please submit your answers by October 3.

  • Mark your calendar for our in-person week September 30 - October 3 to talk with the project team about your school travel habits and help identify places that need walking, biking and rolling improvements.

Visit the Kansas Safe Routes to School website to learn more about Safe Routes to Schools and about the Planning and Programming grant program. If you have any specific questions about Leavenworth’s plan, please reach out to Michael Stephan at mstephan@firstcity.org

  • Talk to us in person at our pop-up event on the evening of October 3 before the 7 p.m. Leavenworth High School Boys' Varsity football game against Piper, at 2012 10th Ave., Leavenworth High School's Pioneer Stadium.
