City of Leavenworth Statement Regarding Sale of Midwest Regional Reception Center

The City of Leavenworth was notified on the morning of Wednesday, August 5, by representatives from CoreCivic that CoreCivic has completed the sale of the Midwest Regional Reception Center in Leavenworth to the United States through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). 

According to a news release issued by CoreCivic, the Leavenworth facility was sold for $238.4 million. CoreCivic stated that it currently expects to continue operating the facility under its existing management contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). CoreCivic also stated that the terms of the management contract may be modified following the change in ownership and that its continued management of the facility is not guaranteed.

The City has not had any direct communication with DHS or ICE regarding the sale of the facility. We remain committed to the open dialogue between the City and CoreCivic that we have established over these last few months. We are reviewing the available information in consultation with our legal counsel and do not have any further comment at this time.
